From the game's encyclopedia
A Monastic Order Patron is an Ecclesiastical or secular Ruler of Duchy Tier or higher who sustains a Monastic Order, most often the ruler who founded it. A patron endows the order with worldly wealth, leasing it Temple Holdings and donating Gold to its coffers.
In return for this generosity, the patron earns Piety and Spiritual Fulfillment. They may also take control of the Order's leader, and have them execute Clerical interactions as a Puppet.
