From the game's encyclopedia
A Monastic Order is a type of Holy Order devoted to prayer, learning, and the spread of a single Tenet. It belongs to the Rite of its founder and champions one of that Rite's Tenets, spreading the practice among the faithful.
Led by an Abbot, a Monastic Order is sustained by the Temple Holdings and Gold granted by its Monastic Order Patrons. The Order then provides Spiritual Fulfillment and Piety in return.
Any Ruler whose Faith permits monasticism can establish one with the Found Monastic Order Decision.
