Rising above Lake Venado, Mount Apo's name means "revered elder" in Lumad languages. It is a shortened form of Apo Sandawa, the spirit of the sacred mountain, also called "Elder Sandawa" or "Grandfather Sandawa." Rituals for Apo Sandawa are performed by the tribe's shaman who is seen as a medium for ancestor spirits.
