This ancient cathedral is the historical center of Armenian Apostolic Christianity. Originally founded by Saint Gregory the Illuminator over a pagan temple to symbolize the triumph of the newly-adopted religion of the Kingdom of Armenia, the church was destructed almost completely during the Sasanid invasion, and rebuilt from the ground some years later. After the 7th century, however, the cathedral has been repeatedly plundered and abandoned, and has fallen into a state of disrepair. Only a drastic and expensive intervention could return it to its previous splendor.
