According to tradition, Lazarus of Bethany, once raised from the dead by Christ, was buried in the town of Larnaca upon his second death. The tomb was lost for centuries but, upon its retrieval, Emperor Leo VI had the saint's remains moved to Constantinople and this imposing church built on top of the grave.
