Sumela Monastery
sumela_monastery_01The origins of this monastery, built on a steep cliff on the Black Mountain, are so remote to be almost shrouded in mystery; according to some, it was first erected by order of Emperor Theodosius in the 4th century, but the sacred spring and ancient frescoes could be even older. The monastery's gem is a fresco of the Mother of God, said to have been painted by Apostle Luke himself.
