Saint Catherine's Monastery
saint_catherineAn unassuming monastery in the middle of the desert, but with a heavy history. The first monastic structure was, in fact, ordered to be built by Emperor Constantine's mother on the site of the apparition of the Burning Bush to Moses. Emperor Justinian financed its expansion into the current fortified monastery, also enclosing the Well of Moses. Only centuries after its foundation did the spoils of Saint Catherine arrive at the monastery, changing its name. The monastery has always been among the most ancient and prolific scriptoria and icon-making centers.
